This internship was my first solo trip abroad - as such I wanted to add some tips and tricks for those of you heading out on an adventure for the first time alone!
Get your flight as early as you can! It will be cheaper the earlier you get it usually. Make sure that if you have never flown alone to find a path with less layovers, it is less stressful by doing it this way. Do your research, for instance I found myself booking Qatar Airways for my round trip flight. They are a great airline and if flying from the US - be warned you may deal with a 14 hour flight.
2. In regards to medical/travel insurance - I use Allianz as they cover not only medical emergencies, but also covers airline delays, cancellations, and lost baggage. They are also not very expensive. You can also use GVI's CISI medical insurance.
3. If going to South Africa in September - November, be sure to bring layers, and some rain gear. It is the start of summer which means thunderstorms, downpour rain, and some occasional wet bird surveys. Light weight hiking pants that are zip off are recommended, as you can change from long pants to shorts easily. Bring hiking boots, flip flops for when on base, and a pair of tennis shoes for days off. Bug spray is recommended highly as the mosquitos are a tad annoying on occasion. For a jacket, light rain proof or rain poncho would be ideal. Cotton short-sleeved shirts are the best way to go with a light sweater for evening drives as it can get cold on game drives.
